VOWEL


· What are vowels?


Vowels are produced without any blockage of the air as it is pushed out of the lungs. Therefore, when we pronounced any vowel, the air flows with no destruction of air in our lungs. Vowels are able to stand alone but the sounds or quality of a vowel depends on the shape of the vocal tract as the air passes through.



· What are short vowels?


Short vowels consist of six symbols


e,ɪ,ɛ,u,ʊ,ʌ


· What are examples of words with short vowels?



bait, bay = e

bed, head = ɛ

bid,insist = ɪ

book, put, poor = ʊ

new, tune = u

bud, none = ʌ



DIPHTHONG




· What are diphthongs?


Diphthongs can be described as the combination of a vowel and a glide. It begins at the point of articulation of one vowel and end at the point of articulation of another.




· What are they?


Diphthongs consist of eight symbols :

ay,aw,ɔy,ou,oi,aʊ , ɔɪ,aI



· What are the examples of words with diphthongs?


ride, write, buy = ay

bound, how = aw

boy, boil = ɔy

out =ou

boil = oi

loud,gown,house = aʊ

void,loin,voice = ɔɪ

tide,time,nice = aI
